Mediator Begins
November 12, 2025

The committees for both the University and Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳FA met for their first day of mediation on November 10. The University’s committee had reviewed proposals tabled by Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳FA at the last meeting, and came prepared to discuss those proposals. The University tabled responses to certain larger proposals.

The committees continue to work together with the mediator to attempt to move forward with discussions on open articles of the collective agreement. While we are early in the mediation process, the University is pleased with the tone of mediation thus far, and hopes that the parties can continue to move towards reaching a collective agreement. Mediation is scheduled to continue on November 20, December 10 and December 19.

Mediator Appointed
October 16, 2025

On October 6, 2025, Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳FA applied to initiate the formal mediation process. On October 16, 2025, Alberta Mediation Services appointed Bruce Moffatt as the mediator.

Given the early stage of the bargaining process, the University considers Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳FA’s request for mediation to be premature. To date, the parties have spent several sessions addressing language matters, many of which stem from changes that Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳FA has proposed to the collective agreement. These discussions remain ongoing, with both parties continuing to work through their respective articles. In addition, several items from each party’s initial proposals have not yet been discussed, and monetary proposals have not yet been exchanged.

The University intends to, as it has throughout this process, work towards reaching a collective agreement with Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳FA. We welcome any assistance our mediator can provide to the process.

Collective Bargaining Continues
September 25, 2025

The committees for both the University and Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳FA met to continue collective bargaining on September 25. The parties first met to begin the bargaining process in May 2025. Since then, the parties have met over 10 times. Much of the discussion has been on articles that Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳FA has asked to substantively review as part of its ingoing proposal.

The parties continue to work through the articles to identify where agreement can be reached, and where issues can be focused. Those discussions continued on September 25. Proposals were exchanged between the parties on issues such as the permanency and advancement processes. The University believes that discussions have been productive.

The parties are next scheduled to meet in November 2025. The University has expressed to Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳FA that it will continue to work on outstanding matters while the parties are away from the table, and has invited Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳FA to do the same.

Ingoing Proposals Exchanged
June 16, 2025

After an initial meeting May 29, 2025 to discuss protocols and process, the bargaining teams for Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳ (Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳) and the Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳ Faculty Association (Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳FA) met on June 11 to begin the collective bargaining process. Ingoing proposals were exchanged. Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳’s can be found here.

Prior to tabling its ingoing proposal, Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳’s bargaining team gave an overview of the challenges the university is facing, which include declining enrolment and increasing operational costs that have not been offset by provincial government funding. We also outlined our collective bargaining goals which include:

  • financial adjustments that consider all circumstances
  • improvements to existing processes and procedures within the collective agreement
  • long-term labour relations stability.

Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳’s ingoing proposal does not address salaries, as is common in collective bargaining. Proposed adjustments will be tabled once administration understands Ë®¹ûÅɹٷ½ÂÛ̳FA’s proposals and the associated costs.
